Ruby in zoisite forms deep within the Earth during metamorphism, where intense heat and pressure allow ruby (corundum) crystals rich in chromium to grow inside green zoisite. This process took place hundreds of millions of years ago, most notably in what is now Tanzania. The chromium that gives ruby its red color also causes it to react under ultraviolet (UV) light. When exposed to UV light, the ruby fluoresces a vivid red or pink glow, while the surrounding zoisite shows little to no reaction, making the ruby stand out dramatically.
